On Hunger strikes

So the spate of hunger strikes that animated Indian politics provided the context for this article that was published in Outlook Magazine.

  2. Read it a bit late, but good to read it a day after all the hoopla came to an end. Completely agree that hunger strikes tacitly accept the adjudicatory power the state.

    I'm too confused with all senses being bombarded with scenes of the hunger strike, but yesterday, was struck by a friend's remark (she supported the strike vehemently) comparing Anna's fast to her own Karwa Chauth fast, how she finds it excruciating and can't imagine an elderly person like 'Annaji' going through it for so many days. There is something about Anna's personality, the name the aura that evokes a sentiment in the middle class, the same sentiment that 'Bapu' evoked, which brings whole families to the streets, which legitimizes a movement. A sentiment that a twenty eight year old woman with an obscure name can't possibly evoke.
